Quote of the Day: Fannie Farmer

"I certainly feel that the time is not far distant when a knowledge of the principles of diet will be an essential part of one's education. Then mankind will eat to live, be able to do better mental and physical work and disease will be less frequent."

from: Retirement--is it time?

Retirement comes when one ceases to work and when one reaches ages 55 and beyond. So just when do you retire, as soon as you reach retirement age; do you hate the idea, or love it? How you feel about retirement in general will probably decide when you retire.

Just as it is a requirement to retire when you reaches a certain age, retirees have to choice but to leave work and their career, and may be hurtful especially to those who spent their life in their career endeavors. However, for those who are self-employed, some opt to continue working as long as there are no heath issues, that may hinder the performance of their job.

Basically if you have no physical or health reasons, and your employer is open to it you can stay on at work if you choose too. The majority of employers are happy to keep good employees on. It would be more costly to hire a new employee with new efforts on training rather than keeping the good ones.

However, not retiring as the time offers may cause valid frustration to the family or the partner of the retiree. This might be due to the reason that the second party has other plans on the retirement like spending time with them which may have been neglected on those career years.

It would be awful to sign on for another five years to find out your wife/husband was looking forward to doing other things when you retired.

If you want to stop working in a full time job, but don't feel like full retirement is warranted, ask about reduced hours. You can also set yourself up in a business as a consultant/tutor for what it is that you do.

Many have decided to start their own business and be their own boss rather than working for an employer, this gives a lot of freedom when it comes to time management . Business established is usually something both can enjoy with their partner, like a small store or a cafe.

Nice little bed and breakfasts are a great way to have a less-work oriented life but still keep your hand in. Plus it can be seasonal, so you can jet off somewhere in the off-season.

There are many choices out there. This stage of your life can mean to add more to your life than ever before. So enjoy and have peace with yourself and your family.
